Indonesia is prioritizing health tourism with its Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025 program. This program is expected to Indonesia Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana opened the program at Taman Balekambang, Solo, on November 1, 2025, the event intends to position Indonesia as one of the best destinations in the world for wellness and holistic tourism for the one-month duration of the event.

This endeavor affirms the government’s prioritization of Indonesia’s positioning as a premier destination for travelers who seek restoration, relaxation, and culturally enriching experiences. Additionally, it responds to the international trends of restorative and mindful tourism.

Global Leadership in Wellness Economics

Minister Widiyanti cited the Global Wellness Institute 2023 Report, which ranks Indonesia first worldwide in the overall wellness economics category, with a valuation of US$56.4 billion (Rp939 trillion). Indonesia also ranks as the third fastest-growing wellness economy in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting both strong domestic and international demand.

She explained that modern travelers are increasingly seeking experiences that go beyond recreation — preferring destinations that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. “Tourists now look for vacations that heal. They want to recharge and return home healthier and happier,” Widiyanti said after the opening ceremony.

Seven Pillars of Wellness Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has outlined seven key categories of wellness tourism under the national initiative. These include:

  1. Spa and relaxation tourism
  2. Traditional and complementary therapies, including herbal medicine and Jamu
  3. Healthy culinary experiences focused on local and organic ingredients
  4. Fitness and lifestyle activities
  5. Arts and cultural engagements promoting emotional and mental wellness
  6. Nature and outdoor retreats for stress relief and mindfulness
  7. Community-based programs connecting travelers with local wellness traditions

Widiyanti highlighted Solo’s unique role as an ideal model for wellness tourism. The city’s deep cultural heritage, culinary diversity, and creative industries make it a natural hub for spiritual and physical rejuvenation. “Solo is very suited for fitness and cultural tourism,” she said. “Visitors can experience Javanese music, traditional dance, and healthy food preparation — while enjoying a slower, more meaningful travel experience.”

Launch of the Wellness Travel Guide

As part of the event, the Tourism Ministry introduced a new book titled “Wellness Journey Across the Java Wonders.” The publication serves as a comprehensive guide for the tourism industry — from online travel agents to tour operators — to develop curated wellness travel packages across Solo, Yogyakarta, and Central Java.

The book outlines itineraries, local wellness destinations, and product development opportunities, helping stakeholders promote Indonesia’s wellness ecosystem in domestic and international markets. It also represents a shift toward creating higher-quality tourism products targeting travelers who stay longer and spend more.

Wonderful Indonesia Wellness as a Flagship Program

Vincencius Jemadu, Deputy for Event Organizer Development at the Tourism Ministry, confirmed that Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025 has been declared a national flagship program under the country’s special interest tourism agenda.

The event aims to sell at least 5,000 tour packages during its month-long implementation. “This program is special because it promotes wellness as a lifestyle experience rather than just a tourist attraction,” Jemadu said. “Beyond package sales, we expect direct benefits for local MSMEs, projecting transactions to reach between Rp8.5 billion and Rp9 billion.”

He added that ticket sales from the opening and closing events are expected to generate an additional Rp4.5–5 billion, with around 1,000 attendees already recorded on the opening night.

Solo: The Heart of Indonesia’s Wellness Revival

Solo Mayor Respati Aedi expressed gratitude and confidence in the city’s readiness to host the landmark event. “We are honored that Solo has been chosen as the host city for this national wellness initiative,” he said.

Respati noted that Solo’s two cultural pillars — Kraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat and Pura Mangkunegaran — provide a strong foundation for integrating heritage with modern wellness concepts. “Our cultural heritage is a source of healing and inspiration. It perfectly complements the spirit of wellness tourism,” he added.

Solo’s local government has also mobilized the city’s tourism ecosystem, including hotels, spas, transport providers, and community-based enterprises. “Our entire infrastructure — from therapists to MSMEs — is ready to support the program’s success,” Respati assured.

Wellness Tourism’s Economic and Cultural Impact

Beyond its economic potential, Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025 aims to redefine how travelers engage with Indonesia’s culture. By combining health, art, cuisine, and spirituality, the initiative seeks to attract high-value, experience-driven tourists rather than mass-market travelers.

According to the ministry, the wellness segment encourages longer stays, higher spending, and a deeper connection with local communities. It also stimulates local economies through micro and small enterprises, particularly in the spa, herbal, culinary, and cultural sectors.

Moreover, the initiative promotes sustainability by supporting eco-friendly tourism practices, ethical consumption, and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems such as Jamu, Indonesia’s centuries-old herbal medicine tradition.

A Vision for Global Recognition

The Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025 program is more than a domestic campaign. It symbolizes the beginning of a long journey to place Indonesia next to the world wellness tourism superpowers: Thailand, Japan, and India.

Indonesia is filled with biodiversity, varied cultures, and traditions of holistic healing. It also puts the country in a good position to take advantage of the global wellness phenomenon. The initiative is also expected to position Indonesia even more with the “Wonderful Indonesia” brand, embracing its identity as a hospitable, health, and heritage nation.

Solo will be a living showcase of Indonesia’s capacity to merge tradition with innovation—providing travelers not a holiday, but a holiday to wellness.
