Vilnius is celebrating Christmas 2025 as the European Capital of Christmas, lighting up the city with stunning decorations, festive markets, and exciting new seasonal events. The city’s iconic Christmas tree takes center stage, surrounded by sparkling lights and an array of holiday attractions. This year, Vilnius introduces fresh traditions, including a magical Christmas market and a new one-day event, “Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas.” With its vibrant atmosphere, festive spirit, and innovative celebrations, Vilnius promises a truly unforgettable holiday experience for all.

Every year, the city unveils a new and original theme for its Christmas tree, setting trends that captivate locals and tourists alike. Past themes have included whimsical fairytales, birthday cakes, and oversized clocks. This year’s tree features a more traditional aesthetic, embracing the warm and nostalgic colors of red and gold. The classic design reflects a growing desire for authenticity and tradition during the holiday season, especially as economic uncertainty prompts people to prioritize meaningful holiday experiences over extravagant spending. This shift was noted in PwC’s 2025 Holiday Outlook, which found that many respondents wish to return to traditional holiday rituals.

The centerpiece of Vilnius’s Christmas festivities is its towering 20-meter tree, adorned with 25,000 warm white LED lights and 400 ornaments. The tree, located in the city’s historic Cathedral Square, is not just a visual masterpiece but also a symbol of the city’s holiday spirit. Surrounding the tree is a 205-square-meter platform that visitors can access from a 3-meter-high viewing platform, offering the perfect vantage point to admire the stunning display. The platform itself, which has a red carpet-like feel, extends 17 meters in width and allows visitors to walk along and take photographs of the tree from various angles. This marks the third consecutive year that the tree is a natural spruce, kindly donated by residents of the Vilnius District.

“This is a special Christmas for Vilnius as we are the European Christmas Capital and the European Green Capital. Our tree this year sends a message to the whole continent that this is the season for genuine emotion and quality time. Joyful moments spent together are the most precious Christmas gifts we can have, and this stunning natural spruce, decorated in an original and classical way featuring red and gold colors, will create many of these moments for residents and visitors alike,” said Mayor of Vilnius, Valdas Benkunskas.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, this year Vilnius introduces a new tradition called Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas. Taking place on December 13, 2025, this one-day event is designed for those who can’t wait for Christmas. The city will be transformed into a holiday wonderland, offering a range of exciting activities. Festively decorated trains will bring visitors into the city, while a special Christmas currency will be used throughout the day. Guests can send free holiday cards through a dedicated postal service, enjoy performances by a 200-member choir, and participate in free guided tours. The event promises to recreate the magic of Christmas through the eyes of a child, offering a truly unique holiday experience.

Throughout the season, the Vilnius Christmas Town in Cathedral Square becomes the heart of the city’s holiday celebrations. Open from November 29 to December 28, the Christmas market is a must-visit destination for visitors. With 48 wooden huts arranged in a picturesque promenade, the market is filled with seasonal treats, including gingerbread, brightly colored candies, and mulled wine. It’s also a great place to shop for one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts, such as handmade amber jewelry, scented candles, and wooden toys crafted by local artisans.

One of the standout features of the market is a traditional two-story Christmas carousel, standing at 10 meters tall. Created by Italian artisans, this charming ride captures the essence of a classic European Christmas market, adding to the overall festive ambiance. The square also features an ice rink in Town Hall Square, perfect for skating under the twinkling lights, while the Christmas train provides a 20-minute ride through Vilnius’ sparkling Old Town streets, offering visitors a chance to see the city’s holiday magic from a unique perspective.

Vilnius is easily accessible, with direct flights from major European cities such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Helsinki, making it a perfect Christmas destination. For those wishing to explore further, the city serves as an excellent base for regional holiday adventures. Lithuania’s national railway, LTG Link, operates Christmas-themed trains to popular destinations within the country, including Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Trakai. Festive trains also run to Warsaw and Krakow, with connections available through Mockava. Vilnius also boasts convenient rail links to Riga and Tallinn, making it an ideal starting point for a Baltic holiday tour.

Whether you’re visiting for the magical tree lighting, the bustling Christmas market, or the festive activities throughout the city, Vilnius offers an enchanting holiday experience that is sure to leave lasting memories. With its blend of tradition, nostalgia, and new holiday traditions, the Lithuanian capital is truly a winter wonderland worth exploring.
