Viking Vela has successfully completed its inaugural year of operations, solidifying its place as a premier vessel in Viking Cruises’ growing luxury fleet. Delivered in December 2024 from Fincantieri Shipyard in Ancona, Italy, the 998-guest ship is the 11th addition to the company’s fleet over the past decade, reflecting Viking’s commitment to delivering modern, immersive cruising experiences.
Immediately after delivery, the ship launched its maiden season in December 2024, exploring the Western Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Its first journey departed from Civitavecchia, Italy, on a seven-night itinerary encompassing Spain, Italy, and France. The voyage included overnight stays in Barcelona and Livorno, offering passengers extended time to experience each city’s culture, architecture, and local cuisine. Additional stops in Marseille, Villefranche, and Sète provided scenic coastal views and historic highlights, establishing a strong first impression for the vessel’s diverse range of itineraries.
Following the Mediterranean sailings, the Viking Vela transitioned to Northern Europe in early January to offer the “In Search of the Northern Lights” itinerary. These 12-night journeys sailed through the Netherlands and Norway, providing guests with the opportunity to witness the Aurora Borealis. The ship also operated extended itineraries to Iceland and the British Isles, blending cultural exploration with adventure in some of Europe’s most striking landscapes. These voyages highlighted the vessel’s versatility, combining comfortable cruising with immersive travel experiences.
The Viking Vela continued a similar seasonal pattern in 2026, beginning the year with Mediterranean sailings designed to showcase historic cities, coastal villages, and renowned culinary regions. In January, it returned to Northern Europe for additional Northern Lights cruises that extend through late March. These itineraries cater to travelers seeking the unique allure of Arctic scenery, from dramatic fjords to picturesque villages along Norway’s coastline.
A standout journey on the ship’s 2026 schedule is a 28-night transatlantic voyage departing from Bergen, Norway, in early July. This month-long itinerary sails to New York City, including stops in Norway, Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. Combining long-distance cruising with immersive port experiences, the voyage allows travelers to experience a wide array of regions and climates within a single journey, reflecting the growing interest in extended, adventure-driven luxury cruises.
The Viking Vela represents a key element of Viking Cruises’ broader fleet expansion. Following its debut, the company added another vessel in 2025 and has two more ships scheduled for delivery in 2026. This growth enables the company to offer increasingly diverse itineraries, from short Mediterranean cultural cruises to longer Arctic and transatlantic explorations, while maintaining the high standards of service and design for which the brand is known.
Designed to maximize both comfort and immersion, the Viking Vela features thoughtfully arranged public spaces, dining venues, and observation decks that provide panoramic views of passing landscapes. The ship’s size allows it to visit a variety of ports, including smaller, less-traveled destinations, without compromising its ability to access major cities. This flexibility enables itineraries that combine iconic attractions with hidden gems, offering guests a rich and varied travel experience.
Onboard, the Viking Vela delivers a refined blend of modern luxury and convenience. Staterooms are spacious and designed for comfort, while dining and communal spaces offer elevated experiences that enhance passenger enjoyment of scenic routes. The onboard service focuses on personalized attention and a seamless travel experience, allowing guests to fully engage with the destinations on their itinerary while enjoying the amenities and sophistication of a luxury cruise ship.
Having completed its first year, the Viking Vela continues to serve as a flagship of Viking Cruises’ European and transatlantic operations. Its combination of modern ship design, extensive itineraries, and immersive travel experiences reflects the company’s commitment to providing meaningful, high-quality cruising options. From Mediterranean culture and cuisine to Arctic exploration and transatlantic adventure, the ship caters to travelers seeking a balance of comfort, discovery, and enrichment.
As it enters its second year, the Viking Vela remains a centerpiece of Viking Cruises’ fleet strategy, combining flexible deployment with premium service. Its growing roster of itineraries highlights the company’s continued focus on expanding access to unique destinations while maintaining the high standards expected by luxury travelers. With its first year successfully completed and an ambitious schedule ahead, the Viking Vela is poised to continue delivering memorable voyages for passengers across Europe, the Arctic, and North America.
