Travel Foundation and Destination Wayfinder launch updated climate action guide for DMOs

The Travel Foundation and Destination Wayfinder have released the 2025 edition of Destination Stewardship: A Guide to Action on Climate Change, offering destination organisations 37 practical actions and global case studies aligned with the Glasgow Declaration.

The Travel Foundation, in partnership with Destination Wayfinder, has introduced the 2025 edition of Destination Stewardship: A Guide to Action on Climate Change during the COP30 climate summit. Designed to support destination organisations in leading climate-responsive strategies, the updated white paper provides a clear roadmap for moving from commitments to implementation, using tourism as a driver of systemic climate solutions.

Produced by the Travel Foundation, an independent charity focused on unlocking tourism’s positive impact, the new edition builds on its 2023 predecessor and is fully aligned with the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism. The report outlines 37 practical actions across six priority areas: planning, measurement, decarbonisation, regeneration, collaboration and financing. It features new research and a broad selection of global case studies from destinations including California, Fiji, Scotland and Singapore.

“Tourism’s climate transition depends on destinations taking the lead,” said Jeremy Smith, climate action expert at the Travel Foundation and lead author of the report. “This report provides some practical inspiration, with 37 ideas backed by over 90 real-world examples and resources, to help DMOs consider actions that reflect local priorities while aligning with the Glasgow Declaration’s global goals.”

The publication highlights how destination organisations can shift from high-level pledges to measurable outcomes, emphasising that climate resilience is inseparable from destination resilience. It positions climate action as a guiding framework that supports long-term planning, visitor management, infrastructure development and community wellbeing. The report illustrates how DMOs are uniquely equipped to unite government, private sector stakeholders and local communities to drive collective climate leadership.

“Few industries are as exposed to the impacts of climate change, or as well positioned to lead on its solutions, as tourism,” said Kristin Dunne, Vice President at Destination Wayfinder. “This report underscores the industry’s capacity to create destinations that are more resilient, inclusive, and thriving for both residents and visitors.”

Alongside the launch, the Travel Foundation is hosting a series of online sessions for COP30, aimed at helping tourism professionals explore the report’s framework and practical applications. For destination managers and tourism stakeholders, the guide provides a timely and actionable resource as the global industry accelerates its transition toward net-zero and climate-resilient futures.
