Recent geopolitical tensions have impacted these areas, reducing tourism and stifling local economies. By focusing on these underserved provinces, the Thai government aims to boost local incomes and encourage regional development through tourism.

The seven provinces targeted by the initiative—Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat—are home to rich cultural histories and scenic landscapes, yet have been largely overlooked by mainstream tourism. The government’s strategy focuses on stimulating tourism activity in these regions, thereby fostering growth in small towns and rural areas.

Financial Support and Incentives for Tourism Operators

To facilitate the growth of tourism in these provinces, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will offer subsidies to tour operators who create group tours to these border regions. A major part of the initiative includes requiring overnight stays in local accommodations, ensuring that visitors contribute directly to the local economy by spending on lodging, meals, and services.

Additionally, the TAT will offer 300 THB (USD 9.26) per night to tour operators for each overnight stay, encouraging longer visits and promoting local hospitality businesses. This financial incentive aims to offset some of the costs for tourists, making it easier for them to visit the targeted regions while ensuring the benefits of tourism are distributed to local communities.
