Japan Now Has More Ways to Reach Europe as Vietnam Airlines Adds New Afternoon Flights from Osaka to Hanoi

Vietnam Airlines plans two flights each way daily between Osaka and Hanoi from 30 November

Japan’s Osaka–Hanoi route gained four weekly return flights on 26 October 2026, when Vietnam Airlines introduced a 15:40 departure from Kansai International Airport. Passengers can now spend the morning in western Japan and reach Hanoi at 19:15 the same day. The addition takes the carrier from seven to 11 weekly return flights. From 30 November, it plans two departures each way every day through 27 March 2027. Travellers starting in Hanoi also gain a daytime option, leaving at 08:30 and reaching Osaka at 14:25. All times are local.

What the Osaka–Hanoi Timetable Changes

The main change is a choice of departure time on an established route. The percentages below are an editorial assessment of the relative importance of each subject. They total 100%. The flight counts and visitor figures in the next column come from the official records linked in each row.

For a traveller with an afternoon appointment in Hanoi, the existing morning service still makes sense. Someone finishing a holiday in Kyoto can take the later flight without spending another night in Japan. Those are choices the timetable makes possible. The published figures do not show how many passengers have taken up either option or whether hotel bookings or fares have changed.

How Vietnam Airlines Moved From Seven Weekly Return Flights to 11

On 9 July, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam reported a plan to increase flights on existing Northeast Asian routes. It attributed the expansion to demand for holidays, business trips and family visits. The July notice gave 1 December for the move to 14 weekly Osaka–Hanoi services. The October winter timetable put the daily pattern from 30 November. That Monday already fell on an operating day under the July plan, so the two notices agree on whether passengers can travel that afternoon. Wednesday afternoon departures begin on 2 December.

Vietnam Airlines launched the new flight on Monday 26 October. Through Saturday 28 November, it operates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The increase from seven to 11 weekly return flights is about 57%. Osaka passengers can choose between the established 10:00 departure, VN335, and the new 15:40 departure, VN339, on those four days. The Hanoi arrivals board lists their scheduled arrival times as 13:35 and 19:15. That five-hour, 40-minute difference also applies to the time available in Hanoi on arrival day.

What Visitor Figures Say About Travel Between Japan and Vietnam

Vietnam’s tourism ministry ranked Japan seventh among its overseas visitor markets for January to October 2026. About 757,500 arrivals from Japan represented roughly four of every 100 international arrivals in Vietnam. The national total reached 19.5 million, up 13.8% on the same ten months of 2025. Nearly the entire reporting period preceded the launch. The figures help explain the size of the market Vietnam Airlines serves, but cannot show how many additional visitors came because of the new flight.

In the other direction, the Japan National Tourism Organization estimated 551,100 arrivals from Vietnam between January and September 2026, up 4.0% on the same period in 2025. September alone brought 45,800 arrivals, down 9.2% year on year. Japan’s figures include some people travelling for study or work. They also cover every point of entry into Japan. Japan and Vietnam are developing a plan to double two-way visitor arrivals by 2030. Neither country has linked that target to bookings on this service.

Where Afternoon Flights From Osaka Connect in Hanoi

Vietnam Airlines says the evening arrival gives passengers more options for onward travel to Europe, Australia and India. For someone comparing two tickets, the onward departure time matters more than the list of destinations. A flight leaving Hanoi shortly after midnight carries the following day’s date. Travellers ending their journey in the capital have a different calculation. Noi Bai’s ground transport guide lists bus 86 to Hanoi Railway Station at 50,000 Vietnamese dong per person.

Passengers with an onward international boarding pass and bags checked through can stay inside Terminal 2. The airport’s transfer guide directs them to the second-floor transfer area before immigration, then upstairs for security. A domestic connection involves entering Vietnam, collecting checked bags, clearing customs and taking the free shuttle to Terminal 1. There, passengers check their bags in again. A shorter gap between flights may therefore be less useful to a traveller continuing within Vietnam than to someone transferring inside the international terminal.

What to Check Before Booking Either Direction

For November travel with Vietnam Airlines, check the outward and return dates separately. A Saturday departure early in the month has the additional flight in both directions. A Sunday return that same weekend follows the original daily pattern. The following checks cover the timetable, the airport journey and the documents required for entry.

  • Compare Afternoon Flights From Osaka. Check VN339 against the morning departure. In the other direction, VN338 leaves Hanoi at 08:30 and reaches Kansai at 14:25. The new services use an A321. Japan is two hours ahead of Vietnam, so the scheduled journey from Osaka takes five hours and 35 minutes.
  • Check passport validity for Vietnam. Japanese ordinary passport holders using the 45-day waiver need at least six months’ validity on arrival, according to consular guidance.
  • Check the Japanese visa category. Vietnamese nationals resident in Vietnam can qualify for a 15-day, single-entry tourist eVISA on an eligible package tour. Holders must display the live issuance notice at the airport.
  • Allow for ground travel in Japan. The Kansai rail guide gives approximate express journey times of 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka and 75 minutes to Kyoto, after passengers reach the station.

The route expansion introduces no new passport or visa rules. Anyone spending a night in Hanoi before flying onwards must meet Vietnam’s entry conditions. Travellers arriving in Japan should consult the Japanese mission responsible for their place of residence, particularly if their trip falls outside the package-tour rules. For applications accepted in Vietnam from 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, the standard single-entry visa fee is 2,590,000 Vietnamese dong.

When Afternoon Flights From Osaka Become Daily

From 30 November, Vietnam Airlines plans to offer a morning and an afternoon departure from Kansai every day. The extra choice matters most on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, when only the morning service currently operates. For travellers starting in Hanoi, the new morning flight leaves time to reach Osaka or Kyoto that afternoon. The published winter schedule runs through 27 March 2027. Anyone returning after that date should check the timetable for the homeward journey. The additional flights give travellers more control over their time in each country. Their effect on visitor numbers will take longer to establish with confidence.
