Talgo’s €80 Million Contract Marks a New Era in Uzbekistan’s Rail Travel, Enhancing Connectivity and Passenger Experience

Talgo, the Spanish leader in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of high-speed, lightweight rail vehicles, has cemented its long-standing presence in Uzbekistan

Talgo, the Spanish leader in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of high-speed, lightweight rail vehicles, has cemented its long-standing presence in Uzbekistan by securing a ten-year comprehensive maintenance contract worth approximately €80 million with the national railway company, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari (UTY). This agreement, marking Talgo’s largest maintenance deal in Uzbekistan to date, follows more than 15 years of successful collaborations, establishing Spanish high-speed rail technology as a cornerstone of Central Asia’s railway infrastructure.

The deal will see Talgo maintain the fleet of six Talgo 250 trains currently operating in Uzbekistan. These high-speed trains, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 230 km/h under commercial conditions, are designed to reach speeds of up to 275 km/h. This maintenance contract ensures the continued performance, reliability, and availability of the fleet for the next decade, further solidifying Talgo’s strategic partnership with UTY.

A Milestone in Uzbekistan’s Rail History

Talgo’s journey in Uzbekistan began in 2009, when the country acquired its first set of Talgo 250 trains, consisting of two nine-car units. These trains entered service in 2011, revolutionizing rail travel in Uzbekistan with their innovative design and speed capabilities. In 2011, a second contract followed, adding two additional eleven-car trains to the fleet, which began operation in 2017. The fleet grew further in 2019 when UTY added two more eleven-car Talgo 250 units, which became operational in 2021. To enhance the first batch of trains, four more cars were added to the original two sets.

This progression of acquisitions demonstrates Uzbekistan’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure, with Talgo trains playing a central role in this transformation. The trains in Uzbekistan operate under Series 130 and 730, which are the equivalent models used in Spain under the Renfe-operated Alvia brand. The trains incorporate Talgo’s innovative natural pendulation technology, which allows them to increase speed through curves by utilizing the passive tilting of the train’s cars. This feature makes the trains not only faster but also more efficient on curved tracks, improving the overall travel experience.

Tailored to Uzbekistan’s Needs

A unique aspect of the Talgo 250 trains in Uzbekistan is their ability to operate on the country’s Russian broad gauge track of 1,520 mm without the need for a change of track gauge width, a feature that distinguishes them from the Spanish versions of the same trains. This adaptation ensures that Talgo’s technology is seamlessly integrated into Uzbekistan’s existing railway network, enabling efficient and uninterrupted high-speed services across the country.

With this new maintenance contract, Talgo has further reinforced its role as a key player in the Uzbek railway sector. The agreement not only ensures the continued success of the Talgo 250 fleet but also positions Talgo as a leading technological partner for the country’s rail system for the next ten years.

A Strategic Partnership for the Future

As Uzbekistan continues to invest in its rail infrastructure, the country is benefiting from the cutting-edge technology provided by Talgo. This partnership represents a major leap in Uzbekistan’s connectivity and technological development, bringing high-speed, efficient, and reliable rail services to the region. The ongoing collaboration between Talgo and UTY reflects the growing importance of sustainable, modern transportation systems that drive economic growth and enhance the travel experience.

Talgo’s long-term commitment to Uzbekistan highlights the company’s ability to adapt to local needs while providing advanced technology solutions. The latest contract will undoubtedly play a crucial role in maintaining the high operational standards of the Talgo 250 fleet, ensuring that they remain a dependable and integral part of Uzbekistan’s national rail network for years to come.
