Sikkim will host the International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2025, playing a pivotal role in driving growth for Northeast India’s tourism industry. The event will spotlight the region’s commitment to sustainable tourism through eco-friendly practices and community-driven initiatives. By emphasizing these values, Sikkim is setting the stage for inclusive growth that benefits local communities and promotes the Northeast as a year-round destination. ITM 2025 will not only attract investments but also strengthen the tourism infrastructure, ensuring that the region’s tourism potential is fully realized, in line with global sustainability standards.

Over the past decade, the Ministry has hosted ITMs across all eight North Eastern states, leading to steady growth in tourism. Tourist arrivals have increased, infrastructure has improved, and new tourism circuits and products have been developed. This year’s event will focus on presenting the Northeast as a cohesive destination with a unified identity. A major emphasis will be on promoting domestic tourism, positioning the region as a year-round destination that fosters inclusive growth and balanced development across the states.

The event will feature B2B sessions aimed at facilitating partnerships between tourism sellers and buyers, strengthening the tourism value chain. These sessions will be complemented by state presentations where senior officials will showcase tourism products, initiatives, and new offerings from across the region. In addition, industry experts will share insights on the Northeast’s tourism potential, ensuring delegates gain a deeper understanding of the region’s diverse offerings. The agenda will also include cultural performances and technical visits to local attractions, giving delegates an opportunity to explore Sikkim’s unique tourism assets.

A major highlight of ITM 2025 will be the focus on Sikkim’s eco-tourism and community-driven tourism practices. The state is a pioneer in promoting sustainable tourism, particularly through organic living and eco-friendly initiatives. The Ministry aims to use the event to promote these practices, not only within Sikkim but across the Northeast. Special sessions will be held to spotlight the region’s best practices in sustainability, local entrepreneurship, and grassroots tourism initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate how tourism can generate socio-economic benefits while maintaining ecological balance and fostering inclusive growth.

In line with its broader strategy for the Northeast, the Ministry has been working on skill development initiatives to enhance employability, promote entrepreneurship, and build community capacity in the tourism and hospitality sectors. These initiatives are designed to ensure that the benefits of tourism reach local communities, with a special focus on youth and women. The Ministry has also been collaborating with Central and State Institutes of Hotel Management (CIHMs), Food Craft Institutes (FCIs), and other institutions to build a skilled workforce capable of meeting the growing demands of the hospitality sector.

Homestays are also playing a vital role in promoting inclusive tourism. These accommodations offer visitors an authentic cultural experience while ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared with grassroots communities. By providing a sustainable source of income to local families, homestays help to foster social inclusion and economic empowerment in the region.

In terms of infrastructure, the Ministry has been proactive in attracting private investment and international collaborations to strengthen the tourism and hospitality sectors in the Northeast. Several key projects under various schemes, including Swadesh Darshan 1.0 & 2.0, PRASHAD, and Challenge-Based Destination Development, have been approved. These projects aim to develop integrated tourism circuits, ropeways, riverfronts, and spiritual tourism sites, with an investment of over INR 3,000 crore. The Ministry is also working closely with state governments to streamline approval processes and promote destination-specific investment opportunities.

Connectivity has seen considerable improvement as well. UDAN-supported air routes have connected remote destinations like Gangtok (Pakyong), Tezu, Pasighat, Dimapur, and Imphal, while rail projects have expanded access to Itanagar, Agartala, and Aizawl. Additionally, improved highway networks and inter-state corridors, developed with the support of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Ministry of DoNER, have opened up even more remote areas to visitors.

The diversification of tourism products has also helped expand the region’s appeal. The Northeast now offers a wide range of tourism experiences, including adventure, wellness, culinary trails, heritage walks, and border tourism. Destinations such as Nathula Pass in Sikkim, Dong and Bum La in Arunachal Pradesh, and Dibang Valley’s Anini are now popular spots for border tourism.

ITM 2025 will build on these achievements, serving as a platform to highlight the Northeast’s sustainable, community-led, and eco-friendly tourism models. It will also showcase successful tourism initiatives from across the region, further solidifying the Northeast’s position as a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travelers.
