Saudia (SV), Saudi Arabia’s national airline, is enhancing its narrowbody long-haul strategy with the upcoming introduction of the Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This new addition will feature a fully-flat business class product, designed to elevate passenger comfort on medium and long-haul routes to Europe, the Indian subcontinent, and Africa.

In May 2023, Saudia first announced its plans to introduce the A321XLRs as part of its modernization strategy. Initially, the airline aimed to have the 15 aircraft delivered by 2024, but delays within the Airbus A321XLR program pushed the timeline back by a few years. Now, Saudia expects deliveries to begin in late 2025, with the aircraft set to enter service in 2026.

The A321XLR, an extended version of the A321neo, boasts an impressive range of 4,700 nautical miles. This allows Saudia to operate more efficient flights on long-haul routes, especially those that do not require widebody aircraft. This extended range enables the airline to serve a range of destinations, including Barcelona, Brussels, Milan, Rome, Dakar, and Malé, starting from May 2026.

One of the standout features of the A321XLR is its interior configuration, designed with passenger comfort in mind. The aircraft will feature a total of 144 seats, with 24 seats in business class and 120 seats in economy. This layout is one of the most premium among A321XLR fleets, focusing on maximizing space and comfort. By comparison, other airlines such as JetBlue offer a similar A321 configuration but with slightly different seat distributions.

Saudia’s business class cabin will be equipped with Thompson VantageSOLO seats, which offer fully-flat beds and direct aisle access for each passenger. The VantageSOLO seat is a significant upgrade over Saudia’s previous business class configurations, providing passengers with enhanced privacy and comfort. The seats are arranged in a herringbone layout, angled towards the aisle. While this layout is effective in optimizing space and access, some passengers may prefer a reverse herringbone configuration, where seats face away from the aisle, offering even more privacy. Although reverse herringbone has become popular with some airlines, such as ITA Airways and Etihad Airways, Saudia has chosen to go with the herringbone layout for its A321XLRs.

The A321XLR’s business class seats will also feature bulkhead positions, which are larger than standard seats. These premium positions will be available for an additional fee and are comparable to the business class suites offered by airlines such as JetBlue. The standard VantageSOLO seats, while slightly smaller, still offer ample personal space, large in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens, and significant privacy. These seats come with custom finishes that align with Saudia’s brand identity, ensuring that passengers enjoy a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment.
