Rome Overtakes Florence and More Cities Among Travel and Tour World’s Top 18 Thanksgiving Destinations in Italy for 2026
Rome takes the No. 1 position as Florence, Venice, Milan, Lake Como, Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast and Sicily emerge among Italy’s leading destinations for American travellers planning a Thanksgiving escape in 2026.
Rome Overtakes Florence and More Cities Among Travel and Tour World’s Top 18 Thanksgiving Destinations in Italy for 2026, highlighting the capital’s cultural appeal, historic landmarks and festive experiences. The ranking showcases Italy’s diverse destinations, offering international travellers memorable opportunities to explore heritage, cuisine, architecture and seasonal traditions during Thanksgiving.
Rome has claimed first place, ahead of Florence, Venice, Milan and Lake Como, in Travel And Tour World’s editorial ranking of the Top 18 Thanksgiving Destinations in Italy for 2026. With its extraordinary concentration of ancient monuments, celebrated cuisine, atmospheric neighbourhoods and extensive tourism infrastructure, the Italian capital gives American travellers a powerful setting for combining the 26 November Thanksgiving holiday with cultural discovery and an extended European city break. From Tuscany’s vineyards and medieval towns to the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Piedmont and the Dolomites, the ranking highlights how Italy’s late-autumn travel season can turn Thanksgiving into a wider journey through food, history, landscape and regional traditions. Thanksgiving Day in the United States falls on Thursday, 26 November 2026.
Travel And Tour World (TTW) has unveiled its Top 18 Thanksgiving Destinations in Italy for 2026, an editorial selection recognising places with strong American visitor appeal, international accessibility, cultural significance, gastronomy, accommodation choice and distinctive late-autumn experiences. Rome ranks first, followed by Florence and Fiesole, Venice, Milan, and Cernobbio, Como and Lake Como in the top five. San Gimignano, Ulignano, Montalcino, Val d’Orcia and Siena rank sixth, followed by Genoa, Amalfi, Naples and Sorrento, and Turin. Alba, Bologna, Syracuse and Ortigia, Palermo, Taormina, Verona, Trento, and Bolzano and Merano complete the Top 18.
The ranking reflects the exceptional importance of the United States to Italian tourism. ENIT data based on Bank of Italy statistics show that more than 4 million US travellers visited Italy in 2025, generating approximately 37.6 million overnight stays and more than €6.6 billion in tourism spending. Momentum continued into 2026: during the first half of the year, around 1.9 million American travellers visited Italy, producing more than 17.7 million overnight stays, with traveller numbers rising 6.2% and overnight stays increasing 7.6% compared with the same period of 2025.
Italy’s official tourism statistics also reinforce the position of the ranking’s leading cities. Istat reports that travellers from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea show a particularly strong preference for Italian urban destinations including Rome, Venice, Milan and Florence. The United States recorded 23.7 million overnight stays in Italian accommodation in 2024, almost double the level recorded a decade earlier.
Rome leads the ranking by combining extraordinary historical depth with the scale and accessibility expected of a major international gateway. American travellers spending Thanksgiving in the Eternal City can build their holiday around the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican Museums and neighbourhood dining, transforming Thanksgiving into a cultural city break rather than relying on a single large public holiday event.
Florence and Fiesole take second place, giving Thanksgiving travellers direct access to Renaissance art, Tuscan gastronomy and surrounding countryside. Tuscany’s official tourism authority particularly promotes autumn as a season for vineyards, food traditions, medieval towns and wine routes, with San Gimignano among its highlighted heritage destinations. Florence also hosts its marathon on 29 November 2026, extending the city’s late-November visitor programme immediately after the American Thanksgiving holiday.
Venice ranks third, supported by its exceptional appeal among long-haul visitors and its distinctive canal-side setting, while Milan takes fourth place with museums, shopping, fashion, dining and a particularly strong cultural calendar during Thanksgiving week. BookCity Milano runs from 23 to 29 November 2026, directly covering Thanksgiving Day and offering literature, talks, performances and cultural programming across the city.
Cernobbio, Como and Lake Como rank fifth, bringing lakeside scenery and premium hospitality into the selection. The ranking then moves deeper into Tuscany, where San Gimignano, Ulignano, Montalcino, Val d’Orcia and Siena create a compelling food-and-wine route. Autumn is particularly suited to vineyard landscapes, traditional regional cuisine, medieval towns and slower countryside travel, making Tuscany a natural extension for Americans seeking a longer Thanksgiving break.
Genoa ranks seventh, combining its UNESCO-listed Palazzi dei Rolli, historic centre and Ligurian cuisine, while Amalfi ranks eighth, placing Thanksgiving travellers on one of Italy’s most internationally recognised coastlines. Naples and Sorrento take ninth place, offering archaeological heritage, Neapolitan gastronomy and access to Campania’s coastline and historic sites.
These rankings also align with broader American travel interest identified by Italy’s national tourism agency. ENIT reported in June 2026 that destinations particularly requested by US travellers include Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Tuscany and the Dolomites, alongside other established Italian leisure regions. ENIT also identified growing American interest in food and wine travel, heritage journeys, weddings, multigenerational holidays and shoulder-season tourism.
Turin ranks tenth, opening the door to Piedmont’s museums, historic cafés and culinary traditions. Nearby Alba, ranked eleventh, strengthens the Thanksgiving proposition through Piedmont’s celebrated food-and-wine identity and the wider autumn truffle season.
Bologna takes twelfth place, drawing on one of Italy’s strongest culinary reputations and easy access to Emilia-Romagna’s gastronomic traditions. During October and November, the Bolognese Apennines also become a major autumn-colour landscape, with official tourism itineraries highlighting forests, mountain villages and scenic trails across the surrounding region.
Sicily secures three positions in the ranking. Syracuse and Ortigia rank thirteenth, Palermo fourteenth and Taormina fifteenth, reflecting the island’s combination of archaeological heritage, markets, Mediterranean cuisine and relatively mild autumn conditions. Italy’s official national tourism portal promotes Sicily as a year-round destination and specifically identifies autumn as an excellent period for exploring historic towns, landscapes, regional festivals and local flavours.
Verona ranks sixteenth, combining Roman heritage, historic squares and Veneto’s food-and-wine culture, while the final two positions take travellers north towards the Alps. Trento ranks seventeenth, followed by Bolzano and Merano at eighteenth, introducing mountain landscapes, vineyards, wellness and South Tyrol’s distinctive autumn traditions.
South Tyrol offers one of the ranking’s most unusual seasonal experiences. The official regional tourism organisation highlights Törggelen, an autumn tradition combining countryside walks with farmhouse meals featuring chestnuts, apples, Speck, Alpine cheese, seasonal produce and new wine. By November, the region also increasingly emphasises wellness, culture and quieter mountain experiences. Bolzano and Merano therefore provide an attractive contrast to Italy’s major art cities during the US Thanksgiving period.
Unlike Thanksgiving in the United States, Thanksgiving is not an Italian national public holiday, and Italy does not offer a nationwide programme of Thanksgiving parades or civic celebrations. The destinations in TTW’s ranking should therefore be understood as places where American travellers can spend their Thanksgiving holiday while experiencing Italy’s own late-autumn attractions. Thanksgiving-specific restaurant dinners, hotel packages and private events may be available in individual destinations, but these require separate confirmation from each venue.
The result is a very different style of Thanksgiving journey. Rather than recreating the American holiday on a national scale, Italy allows travellers to combine familiar traditions with Renaissance cities, vineyard landscapes, historic cafés, Mediterranean coastlines, Alpine scenery, regional markets and some of the world’s most recognised culinary cultures.
“Thanksgiving travel is increasingly about more than reproducing the traditions travellers already know at home. For many Americans, it can become an opportunity to step into a different culture while still preserving the values at the heart of the holiday — gathering together, sharing food, slowing down and creating memories with family and friends. Italy provides an extraordinary setting for that kind of journey because its cities, landscapes and regional cuisines turn even a short November break into a deeply layered travel experience. Rome’s historical scale gives it a natural leadership position, while Florence, Venice and Milan combine art, culture and gastronomy with the accessibility expected by international travellers.
Travel And Tour World’s Top 18 Thanksgiving Destinations in Italy for 2026 also demonstrates that the appeal extends far beyond the country’s best-known gateways. Lake Como brings lakeside elegance, Tuscany connects visitors with vineyards and medieval landscapes, the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento introduce the drama of southern Italy, Piedmont places food and wine at the centre of the journey, while Sicily and the Alpine regions provide completely different cultural and natural settings. The strength of Italy lies in this diversity. American travellers can use Thanksgiving not simply as a holiday abroad, but as a gateway to discover regional identities, local food traditions and historic places at a quieter time of the year. That ability to combine celebration with meaningful destination discovery is what makes Italy such a compelling Thanksgiving choice,” says Anup Kumar Keshan, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Travel And Tour World.
