Located roughly 40 kilometers from Rajamahendravaram, this boarding area is the main gateway for travelers heading to Papikondalu. However, long waiting hours, insufficient facilities, and poor sanitation are increasingly affecting visitors’ overall experience.

Tourists frequently wait in the open without seating or shade, exposed to harsh sunlight or rain depending on the season. The absence of clean toilets adds to the discomfort, especially for elderly visitors and children. Many have had to seek relief in the surrounding forest due to the lack of proper sanitation, emphasizing the urgent need for modern amenities.

Waste management is another major concern at the boat point. Trash piles up around the area, producing foul odors and unhygienic conditions that detract from the natural surroundings. Drinking water is not readily available, leaving visitors thirsty during long waits, which can extend for several hours, particularly during peak travel periods.

Currently, 14 boats ferry tourists from Gandipochamma temple to Papikondalu, with tickets priced at Rs 100 per passenger, collected by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC). Boat operators also pay fees to the Forest Department—Rs 1,375 for boats carrying up to 50 passengers and Rs 2,200 for boats carrying up to 100 passengers. Despite these revenues, the boarding point continues to lack essential facilities for visitors, creating frustration among travelers.

Tourists have voiced concerns over the absence of waiting halls, proper seating, and other basic amenities. Long hours of standing, combined with poor sanitation and limited access to drinking water, often overshadow the natural beauty of the hills and river. The situation also raises safety and health concerns, particularly for families with children and senior citizens.

To address these issues, authorities have allocated Rs 40 lakh for the development of the Gandipochamma boat point. The plan includes the construction of a waiting hall, a coffee shop, and four modern toilets. Tenders for the project have been invited, signaling that work is expected to commence soon. Once completed, these improvements will greatly enhance visitor convenience, allowing tourists to focus on the scenic boat journey rather than infrastructural shortcomings.

Experts suggest that upgrading facilities will not only improve the tourist experience but also benefit the local economy. Proper seating, shaded areas, drinking water, and sanitation will encourage longer stays, boosting income for local businesses and creating employment opportunities. These enhancements can also establish Papikondalu as a model for sustainable tourism, balancing visitor comfort with environmental preservation.

With these upcoming improvements, visitors can look forward to a far more comfortable and enjoyable experience at the boarding point.
