Mysuru experienced a surge in tourism during the holiday season, with attractions like Mysuru Palace and Mysuru Zoo attracting over 4 lakh visitors, despite challenges such as safari bans.
Mysuru has experienced a substantial increase in tourist arrivals during the festival seasons from December 21 to 31 in 2025. Popular sites like Mysuru Palace and Mysuru Zoo received a large turnout of tourists. Mysuru Palace received 2,11,639 visitors (including 1,552 foreigners), while 2,27,135 tourists visited Mysuru Zoo. The increased figures of tourist arrivals show that Mysuru is becoming popular despite the presence of challenges like the safari ban at the Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger reserves near Mysuru due to the incident of the cylinder blast near Mysuru Palace.
Hotel occupancy levels also reached 100% from December 24 to 31, and 80-90% from December 20 to 23, indicating the growing demand for hotel rooms in the city. Despite certain challenges, Mysuru is gradually turning out to be a major hotspot for tourists, along with other factors like cultural events, history, and pleasant winter weather.
Tourism Growth: Record Visitors and Rising Demand
The city’s tourism figures in 2025 highlight its rising appeal as a top travel destination. Despite the challenges, Mysuru continues to see strong demand from both domestic and international tourists. The rise in visitor numbers reflects an increase in interest in Mysuru’s cultural heritage, natural attractions, and winter tourism, with both locals and tourists flocking to the region to celebrate the holiday season.
With 202.37 million domestic trips recorded and a steady increase in foreign visitors, Mysuru’s tourism market is benefiting from growing interest in leisure tourism, family vacations, and cultural experiences. Local businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and tourism sectors, have greatly benefited from this uptick in tourism-related spending. The full hotel occupancy rates from December 24 to 31, coupled with strong growth in tourist footfall, indicate that Mysuru is on track for long-term tourism growth.
Increasing Domestic Travel and Expanding Visitor Base
Domestic travelers have been a key contributor to Mysuru’s tourism growth. The city has consistently attracted a large number of local tourists from within Karnataka and other Indian states, reflecting a shift in travel behavior that favors nearby destinations for vacations, especially during the winter months. According to C. Narayangowda, Mysore Hotel Owners’ Association President, hotel occupancy rates ranged from 80-90% from December 20 to 23, to 100% from December 24 to 31, with tourists from other states making up 50% of the total visitor count.
This shift toward domestic tourism is expected to continue, contributing to Mysuru’s growth as a major regional tourism hub. Moreover, with the rise in interest for eco-tourism, wellness tourism, and local cultural experiences, the Mysuru tourism sector will likely see expanded demand throughout the year, not just during the holiday season.
Expanding Attractions and Tourism Products to Drive Future Growth
Looking ahead, Mysuru’s tourism sector is on a positive trajectory, with plans to expand tourism offerings and diversify visitor experiences. The city is focusing on new tourism products and initiatives to capture high-value tourists, including the promotion of cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and wellness retreats.
Local businesses are also embracing new experiential tourism offerings, such as heritage tours, traditional cooking classes, and community-based tourism activities that connect visitors with local cultures. The expansion of tourism routes and the development of integrated tourism circuits between Mysuru and nearby regions such as Coorg and Kabini will further enhance visitor engagement and contribute to the long-term growth of Mysuru’s tourism industry.
Mysuru’s Tourism Industry: A Key Economic Driver
The tourism sector remains a critical economic driver for Mysuru, with tourism revenue directly supporting local economies. As Mysuru’s tourism sector continues to grow, the region will benefit from increased investment in infrastructure, including hotels, transportation services, and cultural initiatives.
Furthermore, the rise in regional tourism has spurred job creation in tourism-related fields such as hospitality management, event coordination, and tourism services, contributing to the region’s economic diversification. With new investments in tourism infrastructure and continued efforts to make Mysuru an appealing destination for both local and international tourists, the city is set to experience sustained growth in the coming years.
Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Tourism Growth
While Mysuru has made significant progress in boosting its tourism sector, challenges remain. The safari ban in Bandipur and Nagarahole and the cylinder blast incident highlighted the need for better tourism infrastructure and security measures to maintain tourist confidence. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for ensuring the long-term sustainability of tourism growth in the region.
On the positive side, Mysuru has a unique opportunity to capitalize on its growing tourism sector by focusing on sustainable tourism practices and community-based tourism that benefit both local communities and tourists. Ensuring that tourism growth aligns with environmental protection and local development goals will make Mysuru a more resilient and sustainable destination for future generations of travelers.
A Bright Future for Mysuru’s Tourism
The inflow of tourists during the holiday season in the year 2025 is a testament to the popularity of the destination of a tourism hub. With a record number of visitors, the occupancy rate of the hotels soaring, and the domestic as well as international tourism figures steadily increasing, the destination is poised for a bright and prosperous future. Thus, with a plethora of diverse tourism opportunities, the destination of Mysuru is poised to emerge one of the top holiday spots in the entire nation of India, bringing a plethora of prosperity to the tourism industry.
