Milan Bergamo Airport unveils major security and terminal upgrades
Milan Bergamo Airport has opened its next-generation security area, expanded duty-free zone and new gates, significantly improving capacity, passenger flow and comfort ahead of the 2026 summer season.
Milan Bergamo Airport has introduced a series of major infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance capacity, streamline the passenger journey and support the airport’s long-term development strategy. The newly expanded next-generation security area, an enlarged duty-free store and additional terminal gates are now in place ahead of the 2026 summer season.
The airport’s new security screening area spans 3,500 square metres and features fourteen state-of-the-art lanes that allow passengers to keep liquids and electronic devices inside their bags. Each lane enables up to four travellers to prepare simultaneously, increasing throughput and reducing wait times. Predictive flow-management technology guides passengers to the first available lane, further accelerating the process.
To meet different traveller needs, the airport has introduced a dedicated Fast Track Lane and a Family Lane. The security zone has also been designed to maximise natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and supporting the airport’s sustainability objectives.

Milan Bergamo Airport is also introducing an additional 2,000 square metres of
space to the duty-free area.
Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at SACBO, said: “With this expansion, we are offering our passengers one of the most advanced and passenger-friendly security systems in Europe. The combination of cutting-edge technology, intelligent passenger flow management and a bright, spacious environment represents a major step forward in comfort, efficiency and sustainability at Milan Bergamo Airport.”
Beyond security, the airport has added 2,000 square metres to its duty-free shopping area — tripling its size — and offering travellers a wider selection of international brands and retail experiences.
Terminal upgrades also include the addition of two new non-Schengen gates, increasing the overall number of gates to 27. From summer 2026, the airport will operate 16 Schengen and 11 non-Schengen gates, supported by an expanded boarding area with an extra 1,000 square metres of space. These improvements are designed to enhance operational flexibility and accommodate the airport’s growing international route network.

In total, the latest phase of development delivers 7,400 square metres of new space. This follows the earlier 3,700-square-metre expansion on the ground floor, which included a larger check-in area, an upgraded baggage-handling system and expanded warehouse facilities.
The airport’s wider development roadmap continues with the construction of a new Airport Service Center – including a 4-star Hilton Garden Inn hotel and a modern conference venue – scheduled to open in winter 2026. Additionally, work is progressing on the long-awaited rail link that will connect Milan Bergamo Airport with Milan city centre in just 45 minutes. The line is expected to be fully operational by December 2026.
With these enhancements now taking shape, Milan Bergamo Airport strengthens its position as an efficient and modern gateway for Northern Italy, offering airlines and passengers improved service, greater capacity and a more seamless travel experience.
