Le Coq Bleu, A French Homestay in Baguio City

I recently visited Baguio for the Ibagiw Creative Festival. As part of our GASTRO x ART CRAWL activities, we explored several unique establishments participating in the festival, each showcasing dishes infused with local flavors and ingredients. One memorable stop was Le Coq Bleu homestay, a charming Airbnb nestled amid Baguio’s scenic highlands. This cozy retreat offers an intimate dining experience, preparing soulful meals with a local touch for up to six guests—provided their rooms are not already booked, ensuring a truly exclusive and personalized visit.

Le Coq Bleu is the passion project of Chantal Michaut-Pangilinan, a French native who has called the Philippines home for forty years. Chantal is a retired teacher from an international school in Baguio. She designed and constructed the home mostly by herself, using up to 90% recycled and repurposed materials.

Chantal and her Filipino husband, Boi (Rafaelito) Pangilinan, now run the homestay together. She manages the design, breakfasts, and hosting, while Boi helps with hospitality and sometimes assists with dinner.

The name “Le Coq Bleu” (“The Blue Rooster”) came from Chantal’s playful combination of her French roots and her new home. Inspired by the importance of roosters in the Philippines and her love for the calming color blue, she created a name that reflects both cultures.

The home showcases a French-country, château-like style, with an array of mismatched furniture, vintage knick-knacks, artwork, and china—resulting in a maximalist, museum-like ambiance.

Chantal emphasized sustainability in its construction, using recycled materials and planning to install solar panels for greater eco-friendliness.

During our quick visit to Le Coq Bleu, we had a meaningful conversation with Chantal over breakfast, discussing travel, life, and history, making the space feel much more like a home than an ordinary Airbnb.

Location

Le Coq Bleu Homestay is nestled within a scenic, peaceful neighborhood in Baguio City, offering a quiet sanctuary away from the city’s busy streets. Despite its seclusion, the homestay is conveniently close to many of the main attractions, making exploration easy and enjoyable.

When we arrived just after 9 in the morning, it was the perfect time to visit—the brisk mountain air, the earthy aroma of pine needles drifting through the window, and the soothing sound of rustling pine trees created a setting that perfectly captured the charm and calm I crave when visiting Baguio.

Design

There was no towering or flashy signage—just a charming, hand-painted wooden plank, its faded colors and artful lettering resting proudly beside the weathered green metallic gate. From the moment I stepped inside, I sensed this homestay was unlike any other. Le Coq Bleu transports me into a meticulously curated European-Filipino haven, where every detail feels thoughtfully chosen and brimming with nostalgia.

Intricate textures, vibrant hues, and lovingly restored vintage accents blend seamlessly, inviting the eye to linger. Every corner seemed worthy of a magazine cover, urging me to pause and capture its unique beauty. It’s immediately clear that the hosts have poured their hearts and creative vision into designing a space that is both warm and visually captivating, where every object whispers its own story.

Amenities

The Airbnb offered everything a guest could desire for a truly comfortable, restful stay. Luxurious, plush linens adorned the bed, enveloping you in coziness, while soft, ambient lighting created a warm and soothing atmosphere. The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, perfect for both work and relaxation, and the bathroom sparkled with cleanliness, fully stocked with high-quality toiletries and fluffy towels.

Every detail reflected thoughtful attention, from the decor to the amenities. The common areas were especially inviting—sunlit reading nooks with armchairs piled high with pillows, tranquil garden spaces fragrant with blooming flowers, and a dining area set for relaxed, communal meals. Every corner felt carefully curated for comfort and ease, making it the kind of place where you feel genuinely welcomed and cared for, never having to ask for anything.

Accommodation

According to Chantal, the gracious host, Le Coq Bleu offers three distinct room types. The first is a spacious loft-style bedroom, perfect for accommodating up to four guests, featuring cozy beds tucked beneath sloping ceilings and plenty of natural light, accessible by ascending a picturesque staircase beside the inviting dining area.

The second option is a charming suite room for four. For a more tranquil and private experience, there is also a quaint garden cottage nestled below the main structure, ideal for three guests. This charming cottage is surrounded by lush greenery, providing a peaceful retreat close to nature.

Breakfast Offering

During our recent breakfast experience, we delighted in a thoughtfully curated array of French-inspired dishes, each bursting with distinct flavors and textures. Our meal began with a light and airy omelet infused with the rich, smoky flavor from kiniing, perfectly complemented by a silky homemade ube yogurt swirled with hints of sweetness and creaminess. A luscious apple compote, simmered until its fruit was tender and fragrant, added a delightful balance of tart and sweet.

Alongside, we savored crisp, golden-brown croissants, their buttery layers flaking delicately with each bite, as well as tender poached pears infused with subtle spices. A vibrant, fresh fruit salad showcased the juiciest ripe strawberries, sun-kissed peaches, and plump grapes, bursting with natural sweetness. This harmonious blend of traditional local ingredients and sophisticated French culinary techniques resulted in a breakfast that was not only delicious but truly unforgettable.

Breakfast at Le Coq Bleu was easily one of the highlights of my Ibagiw Gastro and Art crawl experience. Whether it was homemade jams, freshly baked bread, or freshly made yogurt, each plate tasted like it was prepared with genuine care. Enjoying my breakfast while taking in the cool breeze and the garden views made the experience even more delightful.

What truly set Le Coq Bleu apart for me was its ambiance. From the moment I stepped onto the property, I could feel its soul—a delicate presence that lingered in every warm, quiet corner. The cozy and serene environment seemed to embrace me, with every corner exuding character through carefully chosen decor and gentle natural lighting.

Tucked away in a serene Baguio neighborhood, the homestay charms guests with its tastefully decorated, French-inspired interiors—filled with antiques, soft lighting, and interesting decorative pieces in every corner. The French host was exceptionally welcoming, graciously sharing stories about local life and culture over delectable breakfasts, each lovingly prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Every aspect of my visit felt personal, from unique décor details and cozy bedrooms to the peaceful garden corners perfect for a morning coffee or afternoon reflection. The ambiance throughout the property fosters genuine relaxation, with tranquil spots for reading or simply unwinding amidst nature’s beauty.

Our visit to Le Coq Bleu was much more than a simple breakfast stop—it became a journey into warmth, hospitality, and unparalleled comfort. The charming homestay didn’t just introduce us to the fascinating life story of the Filipino-French couple who created it; every corner seemed to celebrate the blending of two vibrant cultures.
