Karnataka Maritime Board invests ₹313.5 crore in 10 islands for tourism projects under a public-private partnership, boosting coastal tourism in Udupi and Uttara Kannada.

The Karnataka Maritime Board has selected 10 islands in the districts of Udupi and Uttara Kannada as suitable locations for development of island tourism. This is a part of the state’s initiative to develop the state’s coast as a popular destination for tourists from the state as well as all over the world. This project of island tourism will help in the economic development of the state and will increase the state’s popularity as an important destination in the development of eco-tourism in the country.

Islands Identified for Development

The islands identified for tourism development in Udupi district include:

  • Dariya Bhaudurgad (27 acres)
  • Malpe (8.2 acres)
  • Ayaba (3.9 acres)

In Uttara Kannada district, the following islands have been earmarked for development:

  • Kurumgad (5.05 acres) – Karwar taluk
  • Madhyalingad (6.16 acres) – Karwar taluk
  • Devgad (12.11 acres) – Karwar taluk
  • Mongeraguda (6.56 acres) – Karwar taluk
  • Ankani Cheggudu (11.68 acres) – Ankola taluk
  • Hog (16.22 acres) – Bhatkal taluk
  • Kirikunda (2.1 acres) – Bhatkal taluk

These islands are strategically located to provide unparalleled opportunities for eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and adventure travel, offering a mix of beachfront destinations, wildlife, and local culture. The development of these islands is poised to cater to the growing global tourism demand, with a special focus on sustainable tourism practices and environmental conservation.

Public-Private Partnership Model to Drive Sustainable Tourism Growth

The KMB has proposed to develop these islands under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, specifically using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) framework. The estimated investment for the tourism development of these islands is ₹313.5 crore₹225.5 crore for the seven islands in Uttara Kannada and ₹88 crore for the three islands in Udupi.

This investment will not only support tourism infrastructure development but also stimulate local economies by creating new jobs in hospitality, transportation, tourism services, and sustainability efforts. The PPP model ensures that the tourism projects are implemented efficiently and sustainably, balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.

Promoting Tourism and Enhancing Coastal Connectivity

In addition to the island developments, the KMB is also focused on improving tourism infrastructure along the coast, including a 110-km-long ferry transport corridor between Mangaluru and Maravanthe in Udupi district. This project, which will have five stopsOld Mangaluru Port, Hejamadi, Malpe, Kota, and Maravanthe — will provide a scenic transport route for both tourists and local travelers, enhancing accessibility and promoting sustainable tourism.

The estimated cost for the ferry service is ₹37.79 crore, with projected revenue for the operator reaching ₹179.29 crore over the 20-year concession period. This eco-friendly transportation option will not only improve mobility along the coast but will also enhance tourism by offering travelers an alternative, scenic route to explore coastal Karnataka.

Strengthening Karnataka’s Role in the Growing Global Tourism Market

Karnataka’s coastal tourism sector is poised for significant growth, driven by the development of island tourism and the expansion of transportation networks. The state’s natural beauty, rich culture, and growing focus on sustainability make it an attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers. The proposed island developments will contribute to the long-term growth of the tourism industry, attracting high-value tourists who seek unique, immersive experiences in untouched natural environments.

Tourism Jobs and Economic Benefits for Local Communities

One of the key benefits of the island tourism projects is the potential for job creation in local communities. As tourism infrastructure develops, new employment opportunities will emerge in areas such as hotel management, tour guiding, transportation, and eco-tourism services. This will lead to economic growth in rural and coastal areas, supporting local businesses and contributing to the region’s prosperity.

The development of the islands is also expected to stimulate investment in local small businesses, including restaurants, souvenir shops, and tourism services, creating a ripple effect of economic benefits that will improve living standards and support sustainable livelihoods.

Sustainable Tourism for the Future

Sustainability is at the heart of the KMB’s tourism strategy. The proposed island developments will incorporate eco-friendly practices, including environmentally conscious waste management, water conservation, and wildlife protection. The goal is to ensure that the rapid growth of coastal tourism does not come at the cost of environmental degradation. The eco-tourism approach will also help preserve the region’s biodiversity and maintain its attractiveness for future generations of visitors.

Karnataka’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism Growth

The Karnataka Sea Board’s strategies for developing 10 islands for tourism are the start of a new era in the tourism sector in the state. With a strategy that includes sustainable development and a focus on eco-tourism, the state is set to take the tourism sector by storm. With the projects set to boost the economy through the creation of jobs and promote sustainable tourism practices that are environmentally conscious, the future looks bright for the state as a major player in the rising eco-tourism sector.
