Thailand and Malaysia Lead as Top Visa-Free Destinations for Indian Travelers, Reveals Agoda Data

Recent accommodation search data from digital travel platform Agoda has unveiled interesting trends in the preferences of Indian travelers, with Thailand and Malaysia emerging as the top visa-free international destinations. Meanwhile, Indonesia continues to dominate as the leading choice for those opting for visa-on-arrival (VOA) services. This data, which reveals Indian travelers’ increasing inclination towards destinations that offer easy entry requirements, also highlights the importance of cultural richness and leisure opportunities in shaping their travel choices.

The accommodation search trends were analyzed by Agoda for the period between January 1 and 18, 2026, focusing on check-in dates from February to March 2026. The data revealed that Thailand ranked highest in the list of visa-free destinations, followed closely by Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. These countries have become popular due to their effortless visa policies, diverse offerings, and the appeal of their stunning beaches, cultural experiences, and natural beauty.

Thailand’s top position is no surprise, as it has long been a favorite among Indian travelers. Its appeal lies in a combination of world-famous beaches, vibrant cities, and rich historical sites. From the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serene beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui, Thailand offers a wide range of experiences, all easily accessible for Indian travelers due to its visa-free entry policy. The country’s well-established tourism infrastructure and a diverse array of attractions, from adventure sports to cultural tours, make it a perennial favorite.

Similarly, Malaysia offers an enticing blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, making it a strong competitor in the visa-free destination category. Kuala Lumpur, with its modern skyline, offers plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, while the pristine islands of Langkawi and Penang attract those looking for a more laid-back experience. Malaysia’s easy entry requirements, alongside its rich cultural and culinary offerings, continue to drive its popularity among Indian tourists.

Indonesia, though not offering visa-free access, remains a popular destination for Indian travelers due to its VOA policy. Bali, in particular, has maintained its appeal with its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage that draws both leisure travelers and adventure seekers. Indonesian destinations like Bali are particularly favored for their vibrant nightlife, luxury resorts, and a wide range of activities, from surfing to cultural performances. This accessibility through VOA has helped Indonesia maintain its position as a go-to destination for short-haul vacations.

Sri Lanka, another destination offering VOA access, saw a substantial increase in accommodation searches—an impressive 61% rise compared to the previous year. This surge can be attributed to Sri Lanka’s proximity to India and its diverse offerings, which include rich cultural heritage sites, stunning beaches, and unique wildlife experiences. Cities like Colombo and Kandy, along with destinations like Galle and Mirissa, continue to attract Indian visitors looking for a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

The Maldives, renowned for its luxurious island resorts and crystal-clear waters, also remains a strong contender among the top destinations. While its pristine beaches make it an ideal honeymoon or short-vacation spot, the Maldives continues to appeal to travelers looking for an exclusive getaway with ease of access, bolstering its reputation as a top choice for Indian tourists seeking a slice of paradise.

The Agoda data also highlights other rising destinations among Indian travelers. The Philippines, ranking sixth, saw a notable 73% increase in search volume, driven by its stunning beaches and growing reputation for adventure tourism, particularly among water sports enthusiasts. Nepal, with its visa-free access, came in seventh, attracting travelers seeking a spiritual retreat, trekking opportunities in the Himalayas, and a chance to explore ancient temples and monasteries.

Kazakhstan, a relatively new entry into Indian tourism, secured the eighth position, with a unique offering of Central Asian landscapes, including the Almaty Mountains and vast steppes. Bhutan, also a visa-free destination, ranked ninth, drawing visitors with its wellness tourism offerings and rich cultural experiences. Laos, offering VOA, rounded out the top ten, seeing the highest search growth with an impressive 97% increase. Its growing visibility among Indian travelers, coupled with simplified visa access, has positioned it as a must-visit destination for those interested in Southeast Asia’s cultural and natural richness.

This data underscores the shift in Indian travelers’ preferences toward destinations that not only offer convenient entry procedures but also promise diverse, immersive experiences. As travel becomes more accessible, countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives continue to lead the way, while emerging destinations such as the Philippines, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Bhutan, and Laos are gaining ground, thanks to their cultural appeal and simplified travel regulations.

The growing trend of choosing destinations with both ease of entry and a wealth of cultural and leisure activities reflects the evolving priorities of Indian travelers. As they continue to explore new horizons, destinations offering seamless travel experiences paired with rich cultural offerings will likely see continued growth in visitor numbers.

Commenting on the trend,Gaurav Malik, Country Director, Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said, “Indian travellers are becoming increasingly intentional about their travel choices, with ease of visa accessibility playing a decisive role. Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report also revealed that if visa restrictions were not a factor, 84% of Indians would travel more frequently. 91% said that they would be open to exploring new destinations, the highest among their Asian peers. Furthermore, the growing search interest in emerging destinations such as Laos and the Philippines, alongside established favourites, reflect a growing appetite for diverse, culturally immersive yet hassle-free international travel.
