For instance, while passengers in AC First Class could previously carry up to 150 kg of luggage, the new free allowance has been reduced to 70 kg. Similarly, First Class passengers now have a 50 kg limit instead of 100 kg. AC 3 Tier and Sleeper Class passengers are allowed 40 kg of luggage, while Second Class passengers have a reduced limit of 35 kg.

To ensure smooth travel, passengers are encouraged to pack within these limits. Anyone carrying luggage that exceeds the free allowance will incur additional charges. Specifically, passengers will be charged 1.5 times the standard luggage rate for any excess baggage, but only up to the maximum permissible weight limit for that class. If a passenger carries more than the maximum allowed weight for their class, they will need to make alternative arrangements to transport the excess baggage, as it won’t be allowed inside the coach.

In addition to weight limits, size restrictions for personal luggage have also been introduced. Baggage items such as trunks, suitcases, and boxes should not exceed the following dimensions: 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. Any items that exceed these dimensions will not be permitted inside the passenger coach and must be booked separately in the brake van (SLR) or parcel van. This rule aims to ensure that large items do not obstruct the movement of passengers or cause discomfort during the journey.

It is also important to note that commercial goods or business-related items are not allowed to be carried as personal luggage in passenger compartments. Such items must be booked through separate parcel services, as per Indian Railways’ guidelines.
