As India braces for an unprecedented travel surge, the upcoming Sankranti festival is expected to ignite a record-breaking movement of families across Telangana and major urban hubs. Thousands of travelers, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and migrants working in cities like Hyderabad, are journeying back to their hometowns to partake in the vibrant harvest celebrations. With Bhogi on January 14, Makara Sankranti on January 15, and Kanuma on January 16, the festivities drive millions to reunite with their families, making it one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. This massive exodus is leading to a significant spike in passenger traffic at bus stations, railway terminals, and highways, prompting authorities to implement extensive measures to ensure smooth travel.
As the Sankranti festival draws near, a surge in travelers from Hyderabad is already underway as thousands begin their journey back to their hometowns to celebrate the harvest festival. The festivities, which span from Bhogi on January 14 to Kanuma on January 16, have caused a significant increase in passenger traffic across key transport hubs like Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), and several important railway stations in the city.
The annual exodus of migrants, many of whom have relocated to Hyderabad for work, is at the heart of the celebrations, with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) also making the journey home to partake in the cultural traditions. The festival, a time for families to reunite and mark the harvest season, is a deeply cherished occasion in Telangana, and this year, the rush of travelers is expected to peak as the festival dates approach.
Transport hubs are already witnessing heightened activity. Over the past few days, especially since Friday evening, both bus and train stations have been brimming with passengers. As the festival approaches, the demand for transportation is expected to intensify, creating challenges for both travelers and authorities. However, the Telangana government has been proactive in implementing measures to handle the increased flow of people.
Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Telangana’s Roads and Buildings Minister, reassured the public over the weekend that preparations were in place to ensure the smooth movement of vehicles during this busy period. For instance, in anticipation of the heavy rush along the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway, tolls will be waived to ease traffic congestion. This highway, in particular, is known for its high traffic volumes during the Sankranti festival, with lakhs of people expected to travel in the coming days. The minister also mentioned that additional security personnel, ambulances, cranes, and even a helicopter would be on standby to respond swiftly in case of any emergencies.
In an effort to accommodate the surge in travelers, both the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (TGRTC) and South Central Railway (SCR) have arranged for special services. The TGRTC will deploy an impressive 6,431 special buses during the festival, with ticket fares adjusted to up to 1.5 times the regular cost. These buses are expected to cater to the mass movement of passengers, providing additional transport options to and from Hyderabad.
On the railways front, the South Central Railway, headquartered in Secunderabad, has made extensive preparations to manage the anticipated crowd. Secunderabad station, which serves as a major hub, is expected to handle an average of 2.20 lakh passengers per day during the festival period. To help manage the large number of travelers, the railway station will operate 17 additional booking counters and 20 Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) to speed up ticketing and reduce wait times.
Lingampalli and Charlpalli stations, two other key stations in the region, are also preparing for a sharp rise in footfall. Lingampalli is expected to see around 50,000 passengers per day, while Charlpalli anticipates 35,000. With such high volumes, the SCR has worked closely with local authorities to ensure that crowd management and safety protocols are in place, including deploying additional personnel to assist with boarding and deboarding.
For the convenience of travelers, the authorities have also arranged for extra facilities, including more waiting areas, additional coaches in trains, and enhanced security checks. As a result, passengers are advised to arrive early and remain patient due to the expected congestion at the stations. Authorities have also advised passengers to track the status of their buses and trains to stay updated on any schedule changes or delays.
Sankranti is one of the most celebrated festivals in Telangana, and with the increasing migration of people to cities like Hyderabad for work and education, the three-day festivities have become a significant occasion for travel. It marks a time when families reunite, and cultural traditions, including kite flying, feasts, and the lighting of bonfires, take center stage. This year, the rush is expected to be even more pronounced, as families prepare for the much-anticipated reunions.
With measures in place to tackle the challenges of traffic, passenger management, and emergency response, authorities are optimistic that the festival will pass smoothly. The special services by the TGRTC and SCR, along with the toll waivers and additional infrastructure, reflect the commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of all travelers. As Hyderabad gears up for the grand celebrations of Sankranti, both the public and authorities alike are preparing for what promises to be another unforgettable festival season.
As India prepares for the Sankranti festival, a massive travel surge is expected as thousands journey home to celebrate the harvest season with their families. With key festivals like Bhogi, Makara Sankranti, and Kanuma approaching, this vibrant exodus is creating a record-breaking movement of passengers across Telangana and major urban hubs.
In the coming days, passengers traveling across Hyderabad’s transport network should expect heavy traffic, crowded stations, and higher ticket fares. However, with the robust preparations made by both the Telangana government and transportation agencies, it’s hoped that the festivities will proceed smoothly, allowing travelers to celebrate with their loved ones.
