Glimmering Transformation: Hong Kong’s Central District Unveils A Festive Winter Wonderland To Elevate Global Appeal

Hong Kong's Central District is being transformed into a spectacular Winter Wonderland, featuring a Christmas tree, immersive light shows, and festive markets.

The global perception of Hong Kong as a premier travel destination is continually being reinforced, and a spectacular seasonal initiative has been orchestrated to significantly elevate this standing. A monumental festive transformation, officially titled Winter Wonderland in Central, has been planned, showcasing an extensive and dazzling array of holiday celebrations. This ambitious project is strategically designed to substantially boost tourist arrivals during the crucial year-end period, solidifying the city’s established reputation as Asia’s top winter travel destination. The entire bustling Central District has been meticulously set for this dazzling display, which forms the centerpiece of the annual Hong Kong WinterFest 2025, an initiative meticulously presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB).

The Luminescence of Christmas Town

The foundational element of the festive transformation is the emergence of the Christmas Town, which is being established within the historic bounds of Statue Square Garden in Central. This location is being converted into a joyous hub where the magical, childlike wonder associated with the winter holiday season can be fully experienced by guests of all ages. The transformation period is scheduled to commence on 14 November 2025, and the joyous display will continue illuminating the city until 4 January 2026.

Central to the town’s design is the towering focal point: a magnificent 20-metre-high outdoor Christmas tree. This spectacular centrepiece, roughly equivalent to the height of a six-storey structure, is expected to stand majestically above the bustling activity below. It will be elaborately adorned with luminous ribbons and thousands of twinkling bulbs, serving as a warm, radiant beacon in the heart of the district. The surrounding area is being packed with classic and colourful toy-themed decorations, designed to evoke nostalgia and playful charm. These decorative installations include fantastical elements such as giant toy spaceships, charming puppets, and miniature trains, ensuring that the atmosphere is one of whimsy and enchantment.

The Debut of the Immersive Light Show

A highlight of this year’s Hong Kong WinterFest 2025 is the much-anticipated debut of the Immersive Light Show in Central. This spectacular new component represents an unprecedented scale of festive lighting display in the city. From 28 November 2025, a collection of eight iconic buildings surrounding the newly established Christmas Town will be utilized as an immense, unified canvas for a stunning multimedia light-and-music extravaganza.

The technology employed for this show incorporates advanced 3D projection mapping, synchronized lighting effects, and specially curated holiday melodies. For the first time, these key architectural landmarks are being linked to present a cohesive, dreamlike visual narrative. The participating structures include the Bank of China Building, the Bank of China Tower, the Court of Final Appeal Building, the Hong Kong City Hall High Block, the Hong Kong Club Building, the HSBC Main Building, the Prince’s Building, and the Standard Chartered Bank Building.

The Illumination of Starlight Boulevard

To further enhance the immersive festive journey, the main thoroughfare of Chater Road is being magically transformed. This stretch is being reborn as the Starlight Boulevard, designed to create a seamless glow that effectively links the festive heart of Statue Square Garden with another world-famous installation. Along this boulevard, over thirty trees and pedestrian bridges are being illuminated with suspended light installations, creating a golden canopy that offers a truly magical outdoor Christmas experience every evening.

This glittering walkway will guide visitors toward the much-anticipated Noëlia at LANDMARK installation, located inside the LANDMARK ATRIUM. This specific activation adds significantly to the overall festive spirit, featuring a 30-metre-wide display that includes an 11-metre lighthouse and is home to Hong Kong’s largest interactive Wishing Lake. The installation is scheduled to begin captivating audiences towards the end of November 2025 and continue through January 2026. The comprehensive, unified illumination across Central District ensures that a full and enchanting narrative is presented to every person traversing the area.

Reinforcing Hong Kong’s Global Standing

The overall objective of transforming the Central District into a Winter Wonderland is directly tied to the strategic goal of reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s premier winter travel destination. The Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Dr Peter Lam, has affirmed that the new format of the Hong Kong WinterFest and its extensive event lineup are intended to create a strong festive atmosphere across the entire city. It is understood that such high-profile, coordinated events are essential for attracting international tourists and revitalizing the local tourism sector.

Adding further incentive for global travelers, the WinterFest Delights campaign is being launched in December. This extensive promotional effort, organized in conjunction with industry partners, will feature a comprehensive suite of special offers. More than three hundred exclusive deals are being made available across various sectors, including dining, shopping, attractions, and transport. A user-friendly, one-stop online platform is being provided for visitors to easily explore and utilize all the available promotions.

The full festive calendar of the Hong Kong WinterFest 2025 is set to culminate with the world-renowned New Year’s Eve countdown fireworks spectacle, traditionally held over Victoria Harbour. This grand finale ensures that the period, stretching from November to January, promises an unforgettable holiday experience for all, making Hong Kong shine brighter than ever as Asia’s ultimate Christmas destination. The meticulous planning and collaboration involved in creating the Winter Wonderland demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering a truly magnificent, coordinated celebration, positioning Hong Kong favorably on the global tourism stage.
