Enhanced Connectivity in Guadalajara With New Metro Service
Guadalajara opens its new Line 4 light metro linking Las Juntas and Tlajomulco Centro, boosting transit access and travel options. Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
Guadalajara added another line to its urban rail network Sistemas de Tren Electricos Urbanos (SITEUR) on December 15th 2025, which extends travel north from Las Juntas to Tlajomulco Centro in the southern direction providing more access to the Metropolitan Area.
Running 21.7 kilometers, the line consists of 9 stations and, for its entire length, runs adjacent to and is integrated with a freight line, which offers connection access from the port of Manzanillo to the city of Guadalajara.
Purpose of the Project
The new rail line aims to improve mobility for commuters and reduce road traffic. Authorities expect the service to attract a large number of riders daily and ease travel delays across sectors previously underserved by rail.
This project adds vital rail capacity without heavy new land acquisition, using the existing freight corridor to reduce construction disruption.
Operating Hours and Fares
Service on Line 4 currently runs from 06:00 to 21:00 daily. As part of the launch phase, rides are free until the end of December 2025. Afterward, standard ticket pricing and extended service windows will apply.
Once full fares begin in 2026, the rail line will serve both local commuters and visitors to the region, linking more neighborhoods with the city’s transport network.
Connectivity With Other Transit
Line 4 does not yet physically connect with existing metro lines in Guadalajara. However, it does link with city bus rapid transit options at key stations like Las Juntas and Jalisco 200 Años.
This interchange structure allows passengers to transfer between rail and bus routes, expanding access across the metropolitan area.
Trains and Infrastructure
The line runs on a double electrified track with modern signalling and safety systems.
Trains delivered for the new service are light rail vehicles designed for comfort, accessibility, and reliability. Each train can accommodate hundreds of passengers and is equipped with air conditioning and security systems to ensure a safe ride.
Expected Ridership
Government projections indicate over 100,000 passengers per day will use Line 4 once travel patterns stabilize. This figure reflects the line’s potential to significantly ease pressure on other parts of the city’s transit network.
The new transit option is particularly expected to help residents, students, and workers in southern suburbs with daily travel to central Guadalajara.
Construction and Funding
Work on the line began in 2022, supported through a mix of government and private funding under a public‑private partnership (PPP)
The total investment for the new corridor reached nearly 9.7 billion Mexican pesos, making it one of the largest recent transport infrastructure projects in the region.
Using the freight railway corridor helped accelerate delivery. The approach reduced the need for new land purchase and minimized construction impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
What This Means for Guadalajara
With Line 4’s launch, Guadalajara strengthens its position among Latin America’s most extensive urban rail systems. The city now offers more options for commuters to move quickly across longer distances.
The new service supports regional growth and offers improved transit access for suburban areas south of the city.
Future network plans may include stronger integration between Line 4 and other metro and bus services, further enhancing connectivity.
