Emirates Celebrates 25 Years of Connecting Uganda to Global Destinations with Premium Flights and Community Impact
Emirates, the world’s leading international airline, is marking a significant milestone: 25 years of providing seamless air connectivity between Uganda and the globe.
Emirates, the world’s leading international airline, is marking a significant milestone: 25 years of providing seamless air connectivity between Uganda and the globe. Since its first flight in 2000, the airline has transported nearly 2.8 million passengers across more than 15,900 flights, offering travellers in Uganda easy access to destinations worldwide through its Dubai hub. Over the past quarter-century, Emirates has become a vital link, supporting tourism, trade, and international cultural exchange.
The airline’s operations in Uganda have evolved steadily over the years, responding to increasing passenger demand. Initially, Emirates operated flights three times a week connecting Entebbe with Nairobi, later extending to Addis Ababa. In 2007, the airline transitioned to a direct service to Dubai, improving convenience and reducing travel time. A major upgrade came in 2015 with the introduction of the Boeing 777-200LR, which replaced the Airbus A330-200 and increased seating capacity by 12%. Today, Emirates flies a three-class Boeing 777-300ER on the route, providing First, Business, and Economy cabins and remaining the only airline to offer First Class in and out of Uganda.
Promoting tourism in Uganda has become a key focus for Emirates. In partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board, the airline has highlighted the country’s scenic landscapes, abundant wildlife, adventure activities, and rich cultural heritage across its global network. These initiatives have helped raise international awareness of Uganda as a premier travel destination. Since the beginning of 2025, Emirates has seen a 16% increase in passengers on the Dubai-Entebbe route, with notable traffic from the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, Thailand, and countries in the Middle East. The growth reflects Uganda’s rising appeal and Emirates’ strength in connecting travellers to Africa.
In addition to flight operations, Emirates has invested in local communities. Through the ‘Dubai 7s for Good’ initiative, the airline raised more than 587 million Ugandan Shillings to support a primary school renowned for rugby, football, and netball. The funding has been used to construct a rugby pitch with shaded seating for 2,000 spectators, install 16 solar-powered water stations, and provide sports equipment to students. These improvements have strengthened educational and athletic opportunities, reflecting Emirates’ commitment to social responsibility alongside its commercial operations.
To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Emirates operated a special celebratory flight to Entebbe with a fully refurbished four-class Boeing 777. A static showcase followed, highlighting the airline’s latest innovations. Visitors experienced the newly designed cabins for the first time in Uganda, including lie-flat seats in First and Business Class, premium dining in Premium Economy, and a full suite of amenities in Economy that cater to both comfort and entertainment. The immersive setup allowed guests to experience the airline’s signature service and innovation firsthand.
This anniversary also underscores Emirates’ USD $5 billion fleet-wide refurbishment programme, which is upgrading 219 A380s and Boeing 777s with modern interiors, advanced cabin technology, and enhanced passenger comfort. Managed entirely in-house, the initiative has already completed 72 aircraft, including 36 A380s and 37 Boeing 777s. Once fully implemented, all Emirates destinations, including Uganda, will benefit from the refreshed fleet, ensuring a consistent premium experience for all travellers.
Emirates’ 25-year presence in Uganda highlights a blend of operational excellence, tourism promotion, and community engagement. By expanding air connectivity, enhancing the passenger experience, and supporting local development projects, the airline has helped position Uganda as an increasingly important destination in Africa’s travel landscape.
Looking ahead, Emirates aims to continue expanding its flight network, elevating onboard services, and contributing to sustainable development initiatives in Uganda and across the continent. This milestone not only celebrates the airline’s achievements in aviation but also demonstrates a long-term commitment to building strong partnerships and positively impacting the communities it serves. Through fleet upgrades, tourism promotion, and social investment, Emirates ensures that Uganda remains a key hub in its African operations, connecting travellers to one of the continent’s most captivating destinations.
