There’s something uniquely enchanting about flights to small island destinations in the Philippines. These journeys feel less like ordinary transportation and more like the opening chapter of a memorable adventure, filled with anticipation and wonder.

My recent flight from Clark International Airport to Coron with Sunlight Air captured that special feeling. It was smooth, relaxed, and personal from the moment I stepped on board to my arrival. Here’s how the experience unfolded.

Booking the Flight

From booking with Sunlight Air to receiving my itinerary, the process was refreshingly straightforward. Their website is clean and easy to navigate, which I appreciate when planning trips, especially when juggling accommodation and tours.

The airline specializes in boutique-style flights to select island destinations, and you can feel that focus right away. Routes are limited but curated: places like Coron, Siargao, and Boracay.

The online check-in process took just a few minutes. Adding extra baggage allowance is easy. The confirmation email arrived almost instantly, neatly organized with all the essential details.

The airline’s proactive communication was a thoughtful touch. They sent reminders and detailed instructions well in advance, which eased the usual pre-travel anxiety about baggage policies or check-in procedures.

They also notified us by email of a slight delay due to aircraft maintenance, providing transparency and letting us adjust our plans. This communication impressed me and helped me manage my time and set realistic expectations as a passenger.

Clark International Airport Experience

Clark International Airport is easily one of the most pleasant airports in the Philippines right now.

The terminal feels spacious, modern, and uncrowded compared to Manila’s busy hubs. The high ceilings, natural lighting, and clean layout create a calm environment for travelers.

I wish they would add more plants in some areas to make it feel like a botanical garden, like Changi Airport. Other than that, Clark Airport remains one of the most organized airports in Asia.

Check-in with Sunlight Air was quick and painless. The airline uses a dedicated counter, and the staff greeted passengers with genuine smiles rather than the robotic airport greetings we sometimes get.

Within about ten minutes, I had my boarding pass and my baggage tagged by the friendly staff. The security process was swift and well-organized, so I proceeded without hassle. Soon, I was airside in a spacious boarding area with plenty of time before boarding.

Clark’s departure area offers a good selection of cafés and restaurants. We grabbed lunch before heading to the boarding gate, watching aircraft taxi outside the large glass windows. The atmosphere felt relaxed, more like a regional airport in Japan than a typical Southeast Asian terminal.

The boarding gate has enough comfortable seats for passengers, providing a more spacious and relaxing waiting area than those at NAIA.

The seating in Clark is functional and ergonomically designed to support good posture, and their stylish appearance adds modern elegance. These features make the wait more pleasant, turning a potentially stressful experience into a relaxing moment.

Boarding and First Impressions

Sunlight Air operates ATR turboprop aircraft on routes such as Clark–Coron.

If you’ve never flown on one before, Sunlight Air operates an all-turboprop fleet centered on the ATR 72 family, currently comprising three ATR 72-500s and one newer ATR 72-600. These aircraft are configured for about 68–70 passengers in a single-class layout, optimized for short-haul regional services.

The cabin crew welcomed each passenger individually, and the warmth felt genuine.

Inside, the cabin was immaculately clean, with a pristine, fresh smell lingering in the air. The seating arrangement is a comfortable 2–2 configuration, ensuring passengers avoid the dreaded middle seats—a significant advantage for overall comfort and ease.

Seat Comfort and Cabin Experience

The seats themselves were surprisingly comfortable for a short island flight.

Legroom was decent, and the seat padding felt newer than what you might find on some older regional aircraft. Large windows added to the experience, which is especially important when flying to scenic destinations like Coron.

One of the perks of flying turboprops is the view. Because the aircraft flies lower than jetliners, you can actually see the landscapes and coastlines in detail.

About halfway through the flight, the scenery outside transformed into a breathtaking panorama. I found myself playing a mental quiz, trying to identify the islands spread out below, as local flights lack in-flight entertainment systems that display our current location.

Turquoise waters stretched endlessly beneath us, shimmering in the sunlight as they lapped gently against the hull. Scattered limestone islands emerged from the sea, their rugged shapes resembling emeralds scattered across a pristine, glassy surface. It felt as though the adventure had already begun, even before we touched land.

In-Flight Service

For a relatively short flight (around an hour), the service was thoughtful.

The cabin crew gracefully moved along the aisle, offering a selection of light refreshments to passengers. They handed out crispy banana chips and chilled bottled water with a warm smile, creating a pleasant and attentive service experience. Although modest, the refreshments were served efficiently and thoughtfully, adding a touch of comfort to the journey.

More than anything, what stood out was the crew’s friendliness. They chatted casually with passengers, helped a family settle their child near the window, and answered questions about Coron’s weather and activities.

It felt less like a transactional flight and more like traveling with a team that genuinely enjoys welcoming visitors to Palawan.

Punctuality

One of the most notable aspects of the flight was its punctuality, which stood out amidst the overall experience. Despite a slight delay, it’s important to note that aircraft maintenance is crucial for ensuring the safety of all passengers.

Boarding began exactly when scheduled, the doors closed on time, and pushback happened without delay. The aircraft taxied quickly, and within minutes, we were airborne.

We actually landed in Coron 25 minutes ahead of schedule.

In the Philippines, particularly at the often-delayed NAIA airport, such a high level of efficiency truly stands out and deserves recognition.

Arrival at Coron (Busuanga Airport)

Landing at Busuanga Airport, the gateway to Coron, always feels charmingly rustic.

The runway sits surrounded by rolling hills and greenery, giving the arrival a very island-style welcome. As the turboprop descended, the view of Palawan’s rugged terrain looked like something from a nature documentary.

Disembarking was quick since the aircraft is small. Passengers walked across the tarmac, soaking in the warm island air. There’s something nostalgic about this type of arrival—it feels personal and unhurried.

Since we were heading to Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort, we didn’t need to claim our baggage from the carousel because it already had a resort tag. The resort staff retrieved it for us. We then proceeded to the exclusive SETIR lounge while waiting for our transport to the jetty port.

Standout Moments

A few small details made the flight memorable:

• No middle seats thanks to the 2–2 layout
• Friendly, relaxed crew interactions
• Fantastic island views during descent
• Smooth, punctual operations

But the biggest standout was the overall vibe. Sunlight Air positions itself as a boutique airline, and the experience really does feel more curated and personal than many larger carriers.

Final Thoughts

Flying with Sunlight Air from Clark to Coron turned out to be one of the most pleasant domestic flights I’ve had in the Philippines.

From the smooth booking process and calm Clark airport experience to the friendly cabin crew and scenic island approach, everything felt easy and well-managed.

If you’re planning a trip to Coron and want a flight that feels less stressful and more enjoyable, Sunlight Air is definitely worth considering.

It’s not a luxury airline—but it doesn’t need to be. What it offers instead is efficiency, comfort, and genuine Filipino hospitality.

And honestly, that’s precisely the kind of experience you desire when your ultimate destination is a breathtaking paradise, filled with lush landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and serene tranquility.
