Chabimura in Tripura to be Redeveloped into New World-Class Eco-Tourism Hub with Sixty Crore Investment from ADB

Chabimura, an iconic hill-and-river destination in Tripura, is set for redevelopment into a world-class eco-tourism hub with a Rs 60 crore investment supported by the Asian Development Bank.

Tripura’s iconic hill-and-river destination, Chabimura, is all set for a major facelift, with an investment of Rs 60 crore to redevelop the place into a world-class eco-tourism hub. The ambitious project, supported by Asian Development Bank, has been designed in a way that would improve the tourism infrastructure without disturbing the natural environs and rich archaeological heritage of the place.

Accordingly, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Tuesday that around 35% of the work has been completed so far, and the project is on the right track to be accomplished by the end of this year. It focuses on sustainable growth and eco-friendly tourism, ensuring improvement for visitors to the area while ultimately respecting the ecological balance of the area.

Blending Tourism Development with Nature Conservation

“We are focusing on developing this tourist spot in harmony with nature,” said Chowdhury. Chabimura has already garnered national attention for its unique combination of cultural significance and natural beauty, and the government aims to elevate the destination to a global standard with improved basic amenities.

Chabimura is located along the Gomati River and is renowned for its ancient rock carvings of Hindu deities etched into steep riverbank cliffs. The massive relief of Goddess Durga is one of the most prominent attractions at the site. The area is largely accessible by boat through dense forest stretches, offering opportunities for trekking, bird watching, and scenic river views.

Redevelopment Plans and Eco-Friendly Infrastructure

The comprehensive redevelopment plan includes the construction of 26 eco-friendly log huts, a cafeteria, a children’s play area, landscaped zones, and paved walkways to make the site more accessible and enjoyable for visitors. These changes will enhance the overall tourist experience, ensuring that visitors have access to modern facilities while still being immersed in the region’s natural beauty.

The Chabimura redevelopment project is expected to be completed by October 2026, with a formal public opening planned for December. The project not only aims to improve tourism infrastructure but also focuses on sustainable tourism practices, ensuring that the natural heritage of Chabimura is safeguarded for future generations.

Tourism’s Role in Tripura’s Economic Growth and Future Impact

This project is a crucial part of Tripura’s broader focus on tourism as an economic driver. Chowdhury emphasized that the tourism sector in Tripura was accorded industry status last year, signaling the state’s commitment to promoting tourism as a major economic growth engine. The Chabimura redevelopment, alongside projects like Narikel Kunja and adventure tourism initiatives, is part of Tripura’s strategy to position the state as a prominent tourism destination at the national level.

Tourism in Tripura is expected to emerge as a major livelihood generator across the Northeastern region, creating jobs and boosting local economies. The focus on eco-tourism and sustainable travel practices aligns with growing global trends in responsible tourism, making Chabimura an ideal model for future tourism development in the region.

Future Tourism Growth: Shaping Tripura as a Premier Eco-Tourism Hub

Looking ahead, the future tourism growth for Tripura will be greatly influenced by sustainable tourism practices like those being implemented at Chabimura. As more tourists seek authentic travel experiences that respect the environment and local cultures, Tripura is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing demand. The state’s emphasis on eco-friendly and responsible tourism is expected to drive its growth as a top destination for eco-conscious travelers.

The Chabimura project will not only enhance the region’s tourism infrastructure but will also create a new model for tourism in the Northeast. By prioritizing nature-based tourism that integrates cultural preservation with modern amenities, the project is setting the foundation for future developments that balance economic growth with environmental conservation.

In the coming years, Tripura could become a leading eco-tourism destination, attracting both domestic and international tourists who are increasingly seeking destinations that offer sustainable travel options. This long-term growth trajectory is poised to position the state as a key player in the Northeast’s tourism sector.

A Bright Future for Eco-Tourism in Tripura

The Chabimura redevelopment project is one such futuristic approach that manifests the commitment of Tripura toward ecotourism and sustainable development. The proposed integration of modern facilities with conservation of natural and cultural heritage is sure to turn Chabimura into an eco-tourism spot of global importance. This initiative is also part of the state’s greater tourism strategy aimed at promoting regional tourism for long-term economic gain to the local people.

Successive development of Chabimura will now act as a role model for other Northeast Indian destinations in attracting ecologically aware tourists, promoting local growth and development. Tourism in Tripura is assured of a bright future, with the Chabimura project at the forefront of this growth phase.
