Oman’s tourism revolution is in full swing, marked by the rise of nature and adventure activities that reflect a growing global desire for authentic, immersive travel experiences. Traditionally known for its rich cultural heritage, Oman has always attracted visitors to explore its historical sites and local traditions. However, today’s travelers are increasingly seeking experiences that go beyond cultural exploration, craving deeper connections with nature and adventure. As global tourism shifts towards sustainability and outdoor activities, Oman is embracing this change by expanding its nature-focused tourism offerings, from mountain treks to desert safaris and eco-tourism initiatives. This evolution caters to the modern traveler’s growing interest in authentic, unfiltered interactions with local landscapes and environments. By diversifying its attractions, Oman not only meets this demand but positions itself as a leading destination for those in search of both thrilling adventure and meaningful, eco-conscious experiences.
Oman’s tourism offerings showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes, with nature and active lifestyle activities now taking center stage as the main attractions for travelers. According to a recent analysis by Mabrian, a leading travel intelligence and tourism advisory firm, cultural experiences remain a vital part of Oman’s tourism appeal. However, the study highlights a growing trend where nature and outdoor activities have surpassed cultural attractions as the primary source of discovery and enjoyment for visitors to the Sultanate.
Mabrian, which is part of The Data Appeal Company under the Almawave Group, analyzed supply and demand trends for tourism experiences across Oman’s eight regions, using data from August and September 2025. This analysis sheds light on how Oman’s tourism can evolve to meet changing traveler preferences while strengthening its existing cultural tourism offerings.
The study reveals substantial potential to diversify Oman’s tourism experiences by going beyond its traditional cultural attractions. Nature-based tourism and active lifestyle activities in underrepresented regions offer exciting opportunities for growth. Expanding family-friendly tourism options can further boost Oman’s appeal to a wider range of visitors and encourage longer stays.
Muscat and Ad Dakhliyah Lead Oman’s Tourism Offerings
The data collected by Mabrian shows that 37% of all tourism activities in Oman are related to cultural experiences, highlighting the country’s deep-rooted heritage and monuments. Nature-based activities make up 28% of the offerings, while active tourism, especially outdoor adventures, accounts for 17%. Together, cultural, nature, and active tourism represent 45% of Oman’s total tourism activities. The most popular sub-categories include visits to local heritage sites, natural landscapes, and activities by the sea, reflecting the diverse ways in which travelers engage with the country’s offerings.
Despite the strong presence of cultural experiences, the analysis suggests that family-oriented activities hold a smaller share of the overall tourism portfolio. This presents an opportunity for Oman to develop and highlight more family-friendly experiences, catering to travelers with children of all ages. By expanding this segment, Oman can attract new markets and encourage more domestic and international families to explore the country.
Geographically, the majority of Oman’s tourism offerings are concentrated in the capital, Muscat, and the Ad Dakhliyah region. Together, these areas account for more than half of the country’s tourism experiences. Muscat alone accounts for 37% of all activities, underscoring its role as the cultural hub, main entry point, and primary gateway for international visitors. Ad Dakhliyah, with its impressive forts, scenic canyons, and traditional villages, contributes 16% of the tourism offerings. This region provides a stark contrast to Muscat’s urban environment, offering visitors a more traditional and rural Oman experience.
Further south, Dhofar stands out with its stunning coastal landscapes and the appeal of the Khareef season. Although it currently represents 14% of Oman’s total tourism activities, Dhofar has significant untapped potential to expand its online tourism offerings. The region’s combination of nature and beach experiences, along with its seasonal monsoon-driven beauty, makes it a desirable destination for international tourists, especially those seeking a more tranquil, nature-focused getaway. Musandam, known for its rich seafood culture and cross-cultural influences, also stands out, with its gastronomy experiences gaining prominence. Cultural activities in this region are less common, while food-related experiences are more prominent.
Mabrian’s analysis reveals an organic segmentation of tourism offerings, driven by the unique characteristics of each region. This segmentation allows for the creation of highly customized travel itineraries, tailored to the specific interests of individual travelers. By highlighting these unique regional offerings, Oman can boost travelers’ satisfaction and enhance their overall experience in the country.
International Demand Drives Tourism in Oman
The demand for tourism activities in Oman is predominantly driven by international travelers. German visitors lead the way, followed by travelers from France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The study highlights that international travelers make up the bulk of demand for activities in Oman, with domestic tourism remaining relatively limited. This is likely due to a lower level of local engagement with online platforms for booking experiences.
The study also uncovers distinct preferences among travelers from the top three European markets. Germans show a strong preference for nature-based experiences (34%), reflecting their interest in environmentally conscious travel and outdoor adventures. Italians, on the other hand, are drawn to cultural experiences (31%), with a particular focus on gastronomy and heritage. French visitors exhibit a balanced distribution of interests across cultural, nature-based, and active experiences, showcasing their desire for a diverse range of tourism offerings.
From a traveler profile perspective, the study identifies couples (39%) and solo travelers (25%) as the largest demand segments for tourism activities available online. Groups and families each represent 18% of the demand. This segmentation underscores Oman’s appeal as a safe and welcoming destination, particularly for women, and highlights its reputation as a destination for both solo and couple travelers.
Oman’s tourism revolution is fueled by the growing popularity of nature and adventure activities, reflecting a global shift towards authentic travel experiences. As travelers increasingly seek deeper connections with nature and local cultures, Oman is evolving to offer more immersive, adventure-driven experiences that align with these changing desires.
As Oman continues to refine its tourism offerings, it has the opportunity to expand its appeal by focusing on nature and active experiences in regions currently underrepresented. By developing more family-oriented options and ensuring a stronger online presence for all types of tourism, Oman can attract a broader range of visitors, increase visitor satisfaction, and lengthen the average stay, ultimately contributing to the country’s growing tourism industry.
